Alan McCarthy from the University of Liverpool’s research has focused on the development and application of molecular methods for the analysis of microbial populations in the environment. Funded by NERC, BBSRC and DEFRA, he has a deep knowledge of the molecular ecology of aquatic environments, and the molecular biology and epidemiology of bacterial viruses. The latter was the driver of their recent publications on aquatic metaviromes and quantitative detection of shigatoxigenic bacteriophages in the environment. These programmes have benefitted greatly from close interaction with the NERC NBAF node at CGR Liverpool where both next generation sequencing capability and bioinformatic support have enabled them to push forward the development of metagenomic and metatranscriptomic approaches to gene discovery and quantitation using environmental DNA and RNA as source materials.
