Wastewater Based Epidemiology (WBE)

Providing insight into the spread of disease within communities.

Bangor University is home to an award-winning laboratory team, led by Professor Davey Jones, that’s pioneering the science behind wastewater-based epidemiology. In collaboration with Verily Life Sciences, our team operates a commercial laboratory dedicated to this important field of research.

Together with academic institutions, government bodies, and commercial partners, our scientists use cutting-edge technology to detect DNA and RNA concentrations in wastewater. Our methods are precise, reliable, and capable of delivering near real-time results for a wide range of pathogens.

The team partners with academic institutions, government bodies, and private organisations to develop and perfect techniques for detecting both viral and bacterial traces in wastewater. This allows for accurate, real-time data on the presence of pathogens, helping track disease outbreaks more efficiently.

Through the Bangor X Verily partnership, public health experts, clinicians, and researchers leverage wastewater data to enhance existing health surveillance systems and guide research and development initiatives.
